The Hood Internet

The skinny on The Hood Internet.

ABX and STV SLV (pronounced Steve Sleeve) played in a Chicago band together for a number of years then began making Hood Internet tracks on the side for fun. Word hit the blogosphere and the fans demanded more. 3 years and 300+ tracks later, the dudes haven’t stopped, along the way compiling 4 mixtapes of their favorites, plus some EPs focusing on particular artists like The Pack, Lykke Li and Tobacco. In 2009 they played big festivals like Lollapalooza and Bonnaroo and even hit the studio with the GZA and Cadence Weapon to record a verse on Hood’s remix of Mando Diao’s “Dance With Somebody."

Be it their innovative mashups, positive outlook, or superior photoshop skills, these guys are doing something right and are destined to be a staple on every party playlist.

Chatting with ABX and STV SLV from The Hood Internet.

Q: If you could relocate to any city in the states, where would it be?
STV SLV: It would hard to leave Chicago, but I heard that in California they don’t really have winter, so that’s pretty cool. I suppose NYC is a pretty cliché answer but really it would probably be there or somewhere in Cali.

Q: Favorite Hood Internet release to date?
ABX: I'm going to go with our latest The Mixtape Volume Four.

Q: Best pizza place in Chicago?
STV SLV: Pequod’s is pretty great, so is the aptly named Chicago’s Pizza. There’s an Ian’s in Wrigleyville too now, though that really comes from Madison, Wisconsin. Still good though.

Q: TV shows you’re currently watching?
ABX: The Daily Show, Mad Men, The Office, 30 Rock, Parks and Recreation, Community, LOST, Big Love, Jersey Shore.

Q: Strangest gig you’ve had?
STV SLV: Playing a snowboarding competition in northern Ontario. There was a really dope afterparty that we did along with Chicago bros Hollywood Holt and Million $ Mano, but earlier in the day we were on an outdoor stage totally removed from the hill, basically just playing for passersby in the resort’s common area.

Q: Any good fan stories?
ABX: We were scheduled to play a Halloween show that got shut down before we could go on. So some fans invited us over to play their living room. We played a pretty awesome set out of a guitar amp next to some couches.

Q: If you had to pick one song to incorporate into every new mix, what would it be?
STV SLV: I’m not sure I understand the question but I’m pretty sure my answer is Pill “Trap Goin Ham.”

Q: Favorite indie retail clothing store?
STV SLV: Penelope’s and Akira in Chicago are both great. And we have a couple of Threadless stores here too!

Q: Favorite PG rated movie?
ABX: The first thing that comes to mind is Groundhog Day. So I'm gonna go with that.

Q: Albums you’re excited for in 2010?
STV SLV: Broken Bells, Avalanches, Magnetic Fields, Broken Social Scene, Free Energy, LCD Soundsystem, Hot Chip, The Thermals, No Age, SHAPERS, and the Hood Internet album if we get it released this year.

Q: Feelings towards leggings as pants?
ABX: Neither of us really has the figure to pull them off. Also I like having pockets in my pants. I know there are cargo leggings, but that's just horrible.

Q: East coast or West coast?
STV SLV: Fourth coast AKA that Midwest.

Q: Best dive bar in Chicago?
ABX: Club Foot in Ukranian Village.

Q: Worst fashion trend to come out in the past decade?
STV SLV: All over print

Q: Which of the Hood Internet DJs is the better dancer?
ABX: I'm going to go with STV SLV. Look for him on Dancing With The Stars 2015.

Q: Any book recommendations?
STV SLV: Jonathan Lethem’s The Fortress Of Solitude, Junot Diaz’s The Brief Wondrous Life Of Oscar Wao.

Q: 2 dream openers, dead or alive, for a Hood Internet show?

ABX: Otis Redding and The Clash.

Q: iPhone, Blackberry, or Nexus One?
STV SLV: The Cinco-Fone.

Q: If you could have one designer build you a custom wardrobe, who would it be and what would it look like?
ABX: I would have Tim Burton make us some evil computer costumes.

Q: Favorite blogs and magazines?
STV SLV: I’ve really been into The Catorialist lately.

Q: Artist you would like to collaborate with to mix a whole album?
ABX: Dr. Dre

Their responses were so funny. They have a great live set and the top five list was definitely dead on.
